The four canine units of the Garner Police Department attended the state dog trials in Waynesville on June 7-8 and received certification as well as several awards.
The canines and their handlers attend these trials, sponsored by the U.S. Police Canine Association, each year to maintain certification.
Garner Police Officer David Taylor and canine Bandit finished third in overall obedience. Officer Sonny Roberson and Bear finished third in overall suspect search and fourth in the overall competition. Officer Eric Ankarstran and Gunnar finished second in overall agility. Officer Greg Holding and Macky finished third in the overall competition and also received the top novice dog handler award.
As a team, the Police Department’s canine units finished second in the overall team competition.
“Our agency is extremely proud of their performance,” patrol commander Lt. Len Hatcher said. “These handlers and their canine partners have worked hard and trained hard to achieve this level of success on a statewide basis.”
