Roy Alexander (Alex) Bryant, 18, of 5876 Jones Sausage Road in Garner was traveling east on Old Garner Road between Powell Drive and Shotwell Road a little after 7 p.m. when the 1997 Ford he was driving ran off the right side of the road.
Bryant apparently overcorrected, causing his vehicle to swerve left of center and into the path of a 2003 Ford driven by Jennifer Bumgarner, 32, of Clayton, according to highway patrol reports.
Troopers said the teen was killed on impact. Bumgarner and a one-year-old child who was a passenger in her car were both transported to WakeMed with non-life threatening injuries.
Bryant was not wearing a seat belt, according to the patrol, and speed played a factor in the accident. He was estimated to have been driving about 60 mph, 15 miles over the posted speed limit of 45 mph.
"He was loved and respected by both his teachers and peers and will be dearly missed," said Drew Cook, principal of GMHS. "We will certainly keep his family, friends, and loved ones in our thoughts and prayers.
"This is a very difficult time for us all, but GMHS is a family and we will get through this together. In that spirit, please do not hesitate to contact our guidance office if you feel your student may need a counselor’s assistance. We will make every effort to provide whatever help and support that our students may need."
The funeral is scheduled for 11 a.m. Saturday at Poplar Springs Church on Old Stage Road in Raleigh. Arrangements by Lea Funeral Home of Raleigh.
