Joey Pinkney, of Garner, N.C., is a newly published author of the short story "Like Father, Like Son" which is featured in The Soul of a Man: A Triumph of My Soul Anthology. The Soul of a Man has been nominated for Best Short Stories/Anthologies for the 2009 African American Literary Awards Show to be held Thursday, Sept. 24 in Harlem, NY.

"Like Father, Like Son" is centered around the main character Terrence Greene and his struggles with is wife Mary and his wayward, teenage step-son Andre. The short story deals with issues such as the struggles of being a step-parent, teenage drug abuse and spiritual strength. Due to the response to "Like Father, Like Son", Pinkney is writing a novel based on the characters this short story.

The goal for The Soul of a Man, the editor Elissa Gabrielle and the 14 contributors is to show a positive, Christian-based perspective of African American men through short stories, essay and personal testimonies. The contributors are currently on a book signing tour in cities across the U.S. Pinkney is working on bringing the tour and the authors to NC.

"I've decided to randomly choose the order in which I read these marvelous stories. First off it was "Like Father, Like Son". I'm not going to lie; I was a bit upset that the story had to end so fast. That's how good it was. Great job Brother Joey!" ~ Fellow Soul of a Man Contributor Tyrell Floyd

"Joey Pinkney's short story is an interesting perspective of step-father who loves his wife and her son and is written with dramatic skill. As a women/mother, I love the point of view explaining the frustrations of this man who is doing his best to love a son who refuses to love him back. Great job!" Elaine Flowers, author of It's Morning: Torn Lovers and Their Stories
