Jim Cosby, secretary treasurer of the Garner Civitan Club, was named the Best Club Secretary of North Carolina District East of Civitan International at the Civitan Convention in Raleigh.
“Miss Garner Takes Off For Charlotte”
June 18, 1969
Miss Garner of 1969 Deborah Broughton took part in the Miss North Carolina pageant in Charlotte. Broughton said becoming Miss Garner was a dream come true. The article said, “It is estimated that during the next year, Miss Garner will bring to Garner more than a million dollars worth of publicity and an untold amount of good will.”
“Debbie Broughton Semi-Finalist in Miss N.C. Pageant”

Miss Garner was among the ten semi-finalists in the Miss North Carolina pageant held earlier in the month. That was the highest a Miss Garner had ever placed before in the statewide pageant.
“Garner Brothers Meet in Vietnam”
June 25, 1969
Pat and Mike Pope, sons of Mr. and Mrs. Howard Pope, met on a hospital ship in the waters of Vietnam. Pat was a medic in the Navy and Mike was in the Army. Pat was wounded in the early spring and placed on the S.S. Sanctuary. Mike left for a second tour of duty in Korea in late May and had the opportunity to visit his brother.
“Mayor and Board Take Office”

Jack Poole, John Watkins, Billy Buffaloe, R. W. Carter and James Stevens were instated July 7 as Garner’s Board of Aldermen. Joe Creech accepted the duties of the office of Mayor.
“Garner Library Receives $1,200”
July 30, 1969
The Garner Library received money to purchase new books because of the increase in library usage by local citizens. When the library opened it had only 1,000 books; however, by July the library had more than doubled its circulation.
“Alice Creech Makes Hit Record”
August 6, 1969
“Remember Me To New Orleans” by Garner native Alice Creech was released in July by the North State label. By early August, Creech had been well received as an artist throughout North Carolina.
“Longest Long Distance Call”
August 13, 1969
President Richard Nixon spoke with Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin while the astronauts were on the moon. The words were transmitted from the Oval Office to the astronauts through several stations and satellites.
