While the family has health insurance, the only treatment for Marie’s liver disorder is a complete liver transplant, which is not entirely covered. She is on the waiting list at Duke University Hospital in Durham, where estimates for her uncovered medical expenses top $100,000.
Mike Blanton, who handles sales and marketing for Adcock’s, said he was pleased that the company will sponsor the fund-raiser. He pointed out that the entire nursery industry is behind the family and the cause because the girl’s father, Dr. Joe Neal, is a long-time horticulture professor at NC State University and has taught many in the profession.
“We are honored to host the benefit plant sale and hope it will be a tremendous success,” Blanton said. “Our goal is to raise as much as we can to offset what the Neal family will need to spend out-of-pocket for Marie’s medical treatment.” Assistance was sought from COTA, a national organization dedicated to organizing and guiding communities in raising funds for children requiring organ transplants.
The benefit plant sale will include high-quality trees, shrubs, groundcovers and perennials, all grown by Adcock’s. In addition, colorful mums, pansies and violas will be available for purchase. Stormy, the Carolina Hurricane’s mascot, will be on hand at the sale to sign autographs and pose for fan photos from noon until 2 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 26.
