October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month and dressbarn in Garner is kicking off a campaign dedicated to continue fundraising for breast cancer research.

Beginning Oct. 1, all dressbarn stores, including the one located at 2620 Timber Dr. in Garner, will allow customers to "adopt" Biscuit, a stuffed plush dog, for $5; the entire net profit of $2 for each one sold will be donated to the American Cancer Society to support local and national breast cancer initiatives . The campaign will continue through Oct. 31, while supplies last.

"We at dressbarn feel that it's important to give back to the community and cancer is something that affects the lives of so many people in our own neighborhood – whether they have suffered from the disease or know someone who has been affected by the disease," said Eileen Audette, district sales manager for dressbarn in Garner. "With that being said, we look forward to kicking off this campaign in our store and making a difference during Breast Cancer Awareness Month this October. We hope that the Garner area joins in helping our efforts."

The American Cancer Society (ACS) estimates that by the end of the year there will be 192,370 new cases of invasive breast cancer and 40,170 deaths from breast cancer. According to the Society's website, other than skin cancer, breast cancer is the most common cancer among women in the country. And, it is the second leading cause of cancer death in women, after lung cancer.

National Breast Cancer Awareness Month is dedicated to increasing awareness about the importance of detecting breast cancer early. Back in 1985, the program started as a weeklong campaign by ACS with two founding members. But, today the organization is joined by many associations, government agencies and businesses that recognize the awareness month. In October, member organizations of the Board of Sponsors at ACS come together to spread the message that early detection of breast cancer, followed by prompt treatment, saves lives. ACS's goals are simply stated for such an important cause: to prevent cancer, save lives and diminish suffering from cancer.

dressbarn's most recent effort is part of the company's continued partnership with ACS. dressbarn also sponsors annual Relay For Life events where groups walk or run laps to fight against cancer. "We are proud to say that we've worked closely with the American Cancer Society since 2002,and we are determined to continue to raise the bar for participation and contributions moving forward," said dressbarn President and CEO David R. Jaffe.

Darnell added, "With the support of our customers, we know that we will be able to raise additional money for the American Cancer Society, and we hope our contributions will lead to a cure.” Together, with customers and Associates, dressbarn inc. has proudly contributed over $5 million to the American Cancer Society for the fight against cancer.
