Garner police have arrested one of the suspects who allegedly beat and robbed a Papa John's pizza delivery driver last Thursday night. The other five or six suspects involved in the crime remain at large.
Demetrice Lamont Tucker, 17, of 106 Center Street in Garner was charged with common law robbery and assault inflicting serious bodily injury. He is being held in the Wake County Jail under a $500,000 secured bond.
Police responded to a call of a robbery in the parking lot at the Bryan Woods apartment complex around 8:25 P.M. The delivery driver, Di Yang, 51, and witnesses, reported that Yang was assaulted by several black males who beat, kicked, and robbed him of pizzas, his wallet and cash.
Yang was transported to WakeMed where his condition was listed as critical. He was reportedly upgraded to fair over the weekend.
On Friday, investigators identified Tucker as the person in possession of the phone that placed the order for pizza. Officers seized clothing and other items at the suspect's address by use of a search warrant.
This marks the third time since August 14 that a Papa John's delivery driver has been robbed.
A driver was the victim of a strong-arm robbery at Westchester Apartments on Friday, August 14 when thieves took his wallet and cash. On Sunday, August 30, a driver was robbed of pizza, cinnamon sticks, cash and his delivery bag while attempting to make a delivery at Westchester Apartments.
Both Westchester Apartments and Bryan Place are within a one to two minute drive from Papa John's on Vandora Springs Road.
Garner police are offering a reward of up to $1,000 for information leading to an arrest and conviction of the persons participating in the robbery with Tucker. Anyone with information is urged to call Investigator Amy Miller with the Garner Police Department at 919-772-8810 or Crimestoppers at 919-226-CRIME.
