Two high school seniors from Cape Fear Christian Academy - Emily Maradith DeVane and Tyler Brent Lambert - have been nominated as Morehead-Cain Scholars at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Emily DeVane

Emily, 17, daughter of Steve and Cherry DeVane of Lillington, has been a three-sport athlete all four years of high school and plans to participate in four sports this academic year. She has been named an ACSI Distinguished High School Student for Leadership and Academics and “Student of the Quarter” by the Harnett County Medical Association. The teen has frequently represented CFCA on the WRAL-TV 5 program, “Brain Game” and has been actively involved and held offices in such organizations as the Beta Club, Key Club, Teens in Touch, Fellowship of Christian Athletes and many others. Emily is currently serving as president of Cape Fear Christian Academy’s Big Brother/Big Sister program.

Emily’s grandparents are J.F. and Edith DeVane of Fayetteville and Mary Frances Gordon of Dunn.

Following graduation, Emily plans to attend a four-year university to double major in business and communications.

Tyler Lambert

Tyler, 16, son of Brent and Kim Lambert of Fuquay-Varina, served as Chief Marshal at the 2008 graduation exercises and has been selected as a syndicated sports writer for an online Web site, “Bleacher Report.” The teen was the recipient of CFCA’s High School Male Scholar Athlete in 2007 with the highest cumulative grade-point average and was selected to attend Campbell University’s Free Enterprise Leadership Conference in 2008.

In addition to being named an ACSI Distinguished High School Student for Leadership and Academics, Tyler has frequently represented CFCA on the WRAL-TV 5 program, “Brain Game,” he has achieved dozens of academic awards in addition to being actively involved and holding numerous offices in the Beta Club, Student Council, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, National Society of High School Scholars, Yearbook Staff, Teens in Touch, Key Club and many others.

Tyler’s grandparents are Virgie Anderson and the late Rufus Anderson of Fuquay-Varina and Edgar and Dorothy Lambert of Garner. Following graduation, Tyler plans to attend a four-year university to double major in sports journalism and engineering. Any recipients of the Morehead-Cain scholarship - one of the most competitive, prestigious, merit-based scholarships in the nation - will receive paid expenses for four years of undergraduate study including an annual stipend for student fees, housing, meals, books, supplies, summer enrichment programs and a laptop computer, a value of around $80,000 for in-state students. Its inception dates back to 1982.
