Garner Deadlines Thursday by 12 p.m. (the week prior to publication date) is the deadline for submission of typed, faxed and handwritten items to be submitted for the following week's paper. They can be faxed to 552-7564. The deadline for e-mailed submissions is Friday by 5 p.m. Send emails to kgriffith@raleighsouthonline.com. Submissions should be no longer than 100 words.

Upward Basketball and Cheerleading Raleigh First Church of the Nazarene in Garner is registering now through Nov. 22 for Upward Basketball and Cheerleading. New Bethel Baptist Homecoming A Homecoming celebration will be held at New Bethel Baptist Church at 2110 Benson Road in Garner on Sunday, Oct. 18 at 11 a.m. Johnny Ross will be the guest speaker. Garner Public Safety Recognition Night On behalf of the faculty and staff of Garner Magnet High School, Principal Drew Cook would like to cordially invite all sworn law enforcement and public safety officers to attend our next home Varsity football game against Southeast Raleigh High School on Friday, Oct. 23 at 7:30 p.m. As part of Garner Public Safety Recognition Night, all sworn law enforcement and public safety officers (including Police, Fire, EMS, and Rescue) who present their badge or other identification at the gate will receive free admission to the game. In addition, with the help of Pastor Jim Ferry of the Garner Educational Foundation, we would like to have a representative of the agencies present on the field for a brief ceremony and moment of silence at halftime.

Still in Style Consignment Sale Still in Style Consignment Sale will be held Oct. 23-24, at Capital City Christian Church, 4131 Western Blvd., Raleigh. On Oct. 21, consignors drop off from 12 noon to 3 p.m. On Oct. 22, consignors may drop off items from 3 to 6 p.m. The general public sale will be held noon to 6 p.m. on Oct. 23, and the 25 percent off black ticket sale will be on Oct. 24 from 9 a.m. to noon. Designer brands and accessories will be featured.

Rape Defense Seminar On Saturday, Oct. 24, 2009 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. the Garner Police Department will host a four-hour Rape Defense Seminar for Women at the West District Police Substation, 1809 Garner Station Blvd. N.C. SBI reports that on average, one completed rape occurs in North Carolina every four hours; additionally the FBI reports that on average one completed rape occurs in the United States every 5.8 minutes. Participants of this class will be taught and allowed to practice methods on how to be mentally and physically prepared to resist the attack. Homespun Holidays Craft Fair Garner United Methodist Church, 201 Methodist Drive in Garner, is having their fifth annual Homespun Holidays Craft Fair on Saturday, Nov. 7, from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. There will be a wide variety of homemade and very unique crafts this year for your one-stop shopping. There will be no commercial vendors. A full service concession stand will be open all day serving BBQ, Hot Dogs, homemade Brunswick Stew, Chips, Candy and Drinks. Door prizes that are donated by our wonderful vendors will be given away during the fair – you could be a lucky winner! Plan to come out to Garner United Methodist Church, which is right off of Highway 70 on Methodist Drive (across from Hardees, behind Papa John’s Pizza). Bring a neighbor to have a great lunch, enjoy browsing through all the booths and find that perfect Christmas gift for everyone on your list. Southern Regional GAP Kincare Support Group The Southern Regional GAP (Grandparents as Parents) Kincare Support Group meets once a month on the third Friday evening of the month at 6:30 p.m. The mission of the Southern Regional GAP is to provide ongoing support not only to grandparents but all family members caring for other family members. GAP meets at the Fuquay-Varina Presbyterian Church at 310 N. Ennis St. in Fuquay-Varina. The downstairs meeting room can be accessed through the back entrance. Come share resources and community support and listen to informative speakers. Military Families Connection This is a group of military families that live away from a base, who meets to learn from and lean on each other. It is very important to be with others that are going through the same thing that you are. We can help you through the difficult time when your loved one is in harm’s way, or will be deployed soon. We have classes, speakers as needed, and discuss problems and resources. Anyone is welcome to come. Bible Buddies New Life Wesleyan Church is offering Bible Buddies, a special needs class, for ages K-5th. Scouts Needed Troop 397 meets every Monday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at St. Mary Mother of Church in Garner (1008 Vandora Springs Road). The Troop is looking for new members, but those interested must be in at least sixth grade. The Troop does a number of activities including camping, hiking, community service projects and much more.

Immunization Clinic Wake County Human Services offers an Immunization Clinic on Mondays and Fridays at the Wake County Southern Regional Center. The SRC is located at 130 N. Judd Parkway NE in Fuquay-Varina, directly across from the U.S. Post Office, and is open from 8:30 a.m. until 5:15 p.m. Appointments are recommended and can be made by calling 212-7000 and requesting an appointment at SRC. Fees are based on the type of vaccine used, but all children’s’ vaccines are free for all children 18 and younger.
