Dear Editor, My husband and I tried to vote in the Wake County School Board Election this morning and were surprised to find our polling place unmarked and seemingly running a normal school day. Upon entering the building, we found a sign stating that there was no voting today. We both thought we had been misinformed about our polling place and would have to check again. Unfortunately my husband had to leave town on a business trip and would be unable to vote in the election. I tried again this evening and after checking the Wake County Elections website, found that our original location this morning was correct. I thought this odd but ventured there again to try to find answers. The custodial staff informed me that, again, there was no voting at that location today. Still having no answers I decided to go to our former polling place a few miles away. Once again I pulled up to find a dark, vacant building. There was another couple there who had gone through the same steps as I, having been turned away at both locations. Upon calling Wake County they informed me that my district was not permitted to vote in this election! I was flabbergasted! Even though my children attend Wake County Schools and I pay Wake County taxes, I am not permitted to vote in an election that determines the possible future of my children’s education? I understand that only certain district seats are being filled, but when an elected official’s decisions directly effect me, I sure should have a say in who that elected official is! I was never informed that I was not allowed to vote in this election and had actually received candidate paraphernalia in the mail, so why would I think otherwise? This is like telling me that I have no say in who our state Governor is because of the town I live in, or who our President should be because I live in North Carolina and it’s not our turn to vote. The fact that I was not eligible to voice my opinion in this election because of the Wake County district within which I live is completely unacceptable and a flagrant example of the flaws of our current state. Dear Editor, The school board election sends a strong message to the remaining board and school administrators. Winning candidates share conservative views on parental involvement, neighborhood schools and more fiscal transparency. In a crowded slate of five candidates, John Tedesco defeated Cathy Truitt by over a two to one margin, his 49 percent to her 24 percent. He missed the required majority percentile by one percent. Unfortunately for Wake citizens in District 2, Cathy Truitt does not hear the voter’s message and has chosen to file for a run off. An election run off can be a good thing. In a tight race it is an understandable necessity, but this is ridiculous. A cost factor of $6,000 per precinct was given to me. District 2 has 21 precincts. Truitt’s ego is costing the Wake tax payers wasted dollars for this run off. Truitt now uses the term segregation instead of diversity regarding future direction of our schools. Tedesco lived as an “at-risk” child. His life work is dedicated to these children and their families. He understands what diversity programs can do to children and families as well as for them. Truitt read a book. My vote is for John Tedesco. Art Wilson Concerned Grandparent
