Sgt. Chris Adams was awarded his Advanced Law Enforcement Certificate from the N.C. Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Commission this month. This certificate is awarded to officers who develop themselves professionally through post-secondary education, police experience and law-enforcement-related training. Sgt. Adams has been with the Garner Police Department since 1999 and has served as a sergeant since 2006. He currently supervises a patrol team in the West District.

Sandlin selected as Garner's Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) Officer of the Year FCO Sandlin was recognized at a banquet honoring Wake County Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) Officers on Oct. 12, 2009 as the Garner PD CIT Officer of the Year. CIT was formed in Wake County in 2005 as a partnership between law enforcement, mental health providers, and advocacy groups as a pre-booking jail diversion program for mental health consumers in crisis. There are now over 400 CIT trained officers in Wake County among all of the law enforcement agencies. The officers attend forty hours of training for CIT certification, which includes de-escalation skills, mental health diagnoses, medication awareness, and visits to mental health treatment facilities. CIT officers in Wake County are often the first to respond to mental health emergencies and use their skills on a daily basis to make sure mental health consumers get the help they need. FCO Sophia Sandlin was selected for this award due to her commitment to the CIT program and her desire to help mental health consumers. She has been with the Garner Police since 1993, serving currently as an officer in the East District and a field-training officer for new recruits.
