Packages for Patriots III is a continuation of the initial effort by Garner citizens and businesses to support military personnel. Two years ago a dedicated team of volunteers raised funds to send packages to the service members to let them know of our appreciation for their service. The group has send more than 500 boxes previously as well as helping other organizations send out items that there was a need for.

Due to the continued support of the Garner community and assistance from a group of local West Point graduates, volunteers are able to send out another set of packages. On Nov. 21 at the Garner United Methodist Church in Garner, volunteers once again will meet and assemble packages for our patriots from 9 to 11 a.m. We would like to have continued community support of this effort in the way of people who would like to pack, donations of supplies like mentioned above, or financial donations.

As a result of contacts we’ve made, we have been contacted by Capt. Andy Benson who has command of an isolated unit in Iraq with 154 men. Benson heard about our local effort to send out packages to deployed men and women from our area. His US Army unit is projected to remain there until July 2010.
