Kathy Behringer

Current Town Councilwoman Kathy Behringer is finishing up her first term in office. Providing quality services at an acceptable price is one of her top priorities. She also looks forward to the economy’s turnaround so Garner can move forward with capital improvements. She said she also would like to see Garner have a better relationship with the Board of Education. Amaka Flynn

Candidate Amaka Flynn said she would like to bring new energy and fresh ideas to the Town Council. Flynn said she would like to review the budget and find ways to cut back on costs without affecting services for Garner residents. She said some projects may have to be postponed to make sure that citizens are getting quality service. Arnold Osborn

Candidate Arnold Osborn originally hoped to run for the Board of Education District 2 seat, but also sought to help Garner on the Town Council. Osborn said he wants to weed out so much government control and stop wasteful spending. Osborn also said Garner needs to have more common sense with its money to give the taxpayers the best service for their dollar. He said even the small spending items need to be reviewed to see where more cuts can be made to the budget. Mona Parks

Candidate Mona Parks wants to open the lines of communication between the Town of Garner and its residents. She said she also hopes to work on smart growth, improve schools and better Garner’s image. To do this, she wants Garner to further it’s eco-friendliness and bring in business that have a high probability of staying in town. Parks wants to support volunteerism and support teachers. She also would like to better the image of Hwy. 70 in order to draw more people to the town.

Gra Singleton

Currently in his fourth term Town Councilman Gra Singleton said his top priorities are upcoming capital projects and furthering the abilities of public safety teams. He would also like to see long-term goals accomplished, like a community center. Janice Stephenson

Former Garner Town Alderman, Janice Stephenson, who served (two) four-year terms 1989-1993; 1999 - 2003 announced Oct. 25 she is running as a Write-In candidate for Garner Town Council. Stephenson’s name will not be on the ballot and voters would have to write-in for her in the spaces provided at the bottom of the ballot.

Stephenson was approached by friends to enter earlier and declined. But they returned and after discussing the many important issues coming before the council such as re-location of a new Town Hall, the town’s take over of the Fire and Rescue Departments, the Garbage Contract costing the Garner tax payers an additional $360,000.00, crime such as Gangs and Drugs, and a Community Center or a YMCA.

When Stephenson served on the board previously she was responsible for saving the taxpayers of Garner more than $407,000.00 in interest by refinancing some of the town’s municipal bonds. She was also instrumental in saving the Olde Garner High School, which now serves the town as a 45 apartment complex for the elderly and houses The Garner Historic Auditorium. The Historic Lampposts beside the railroad on Main Street was one of Stephenson’s projects.
