Garner Deadlines Thursday by 12 p.m. (the week prior to publication date) is the deadline for submission of typed, faxed and handwritten items to be submitted for the following week's paper. They can be faxed to 552-7564. The deadline for e-mailed submissions is Friday by 5 p.m. Send emails to kgriffith@raleighsouthonline.com. Submissions should be no longer than 100 words.

Upward Basketball and Cheerleading Raleigh First Church of the Nazarene in Garner is registering now through Nov. 22 for Upward Basketball and Cheerleading. This community-wide event is open for boys and girls in K5 - Sixth grade. Registration forms are available at the church office between the hours of 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m., M-F. Thanksgiving Canned Food Drive The Sons of American Legion Post 116 in Fuquay-Varina will again be sponsoring the collection of can and dried food goods for the local Fuquay-Varina Food Pantry. The intent of the Pantry is to distribute emergency supplies to those in need in and around the Fuquay-Varina area. The collection began on Friday, Oct. 23 and run through Friday, Nov. 20. Once again the Recreation Room at Post 116 at 6400 Johnson Pond Road in Fuquay-Varina will be sued as the drop off area. Thank you for your support in providing a helping hand to those in need during this time of year.

GMHS Drama presents Arsenic and Old Lace The GMHS Drama Dept will present the classic comedy "Arsenic and Old Lace" Nov. 5, 6 and 7 in the school auditorium. Each show begins at 7 p.m. and admission is $5, with all proceeds benefiting the drama department. Come enjoy Ms. Prater's direction of your talented classmates!

24th Annual Bar-B-Que Mt. Pleasant Presbyterian Church of Willow Spring will hold its 24th Annual Bar-B-Que on Friday, Nov. 6. The Church will be serving from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. You may dine in buffet style or take out. The menu will consist of whole-hog barbecued pork, with homemade boiled potatoes, slaw, hush puppies and dessert. Ice tea is included with dine-in meals. The cost of each plate is $7. Mt. Brunswick Stew Sale Clyde’s Chapel Baptist Church will hold its annual fall Brunswick stew sale Saturday, Nov. 7. Dinner plates (a half-chicken plus Brunswick stew) will cost $7, a quart of Brunswick stew $6. Children ages 6-12 eat for $3 and younger children eat free. Take-out service begins at 4:30 p.m.; dining in the Fellowship Hall begins at 5 p.m. An auction will be held after the meal. Duke Children’s Hospital Benefit Horse Show Come watch Olympic style show jumping at the $30,000 Duke Grand Prix at 8 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 7, 2009. This grand prix is the highlight of the Duke Children’s Hospital Benefit Horse Show, held Nov. 3 - 8, 2009, at the James B. Hunt Horse Complex, 4601 Trinity Road in Raleigh, NC 27607. Admission to the grand prix is $10 per person with children 10 and under admitted free. The box office opens at 6:30 p.m. Rocky the Trick Mule will perform also. Proceeds from the horse show and grand prix go to support the Duke Children’s Hospital in Durham, N.C. The horse show offers various levels of show jumping each day. Admission to the show is free except for Grand Prix night.

Holiday Bazaar Mt. Zion United Methodist Church invites you to its fifth annual Holiday Bazaar to be held on Saturday, Nov. 7 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall. You’ll be able to shop many displays of arts, jewelry, crafts and holiday gifts showcasing local, unique items. There will be a snack bar with drinks, snacks and desserts. Homespun Holidays Craft Fair Garner United Methodist Church, 201 Methodist Drive in Garner, is having their fifth annual Homespun Holidays Craft Fair on Saturday, Nov. 7, from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. There will be a wide variety of homemade and very unique crafts this year for your one-stop shopping. There will be no commercial vendors. A full service concession stand will be open all day serving BBQ, Hot Dogs, homemade Brunswick Stew, Chips, Candy and Drinks. Door prizes that are donated by our wonderful vendors will be given away during the fair – you could be a lucky winner! Plan to come out to Garner United Methodist Church, which is right off of Highway 70 on Methodist Drive (across from Hardees, behind Papa John’s Pizza). Bring a neighbor to have a great lunch, enjoy browsing through all the booths and find that perfect Christmas gift for everyone on your list. Proceeds go to our Youth Missions Work for their 2010 projects. The youth of the church will be assisting with all of the work involved in the Craft Fair. Harvest Sale Plymouth Church Harvest Sale will be held Saturday, Nov. 7, at 6104 Rock Service Station Rd., Raleigh. There will be crafts, cakes, homemade items, gift baskets, donations from local merchants and more. Proceeds from this fundraiser support mission projects and community outreach. Hotdogs, hamburgers and desserts will be available from 4:30 to 6 p.m. The auction begins at 6:30 p.m.

Thoughts From the Chicken Bus Join North Carolina author, Jenifer Bubenik, on Saturday, Nov. 7, at 11 a.m., and ride along as she recounts the tales of her solo backpacking journey from Belize to Ecuador in her new release, “Thoughts From the Chicken Bus.” Armed with little more than hiking boots and pepper spray, the twenty-nine year old set out solo to Central America; with the goal to push her job and relationship out of her mind. What began as a three-week restorative breathing trip soon ended up as a three-month adventure through the back jungles, active volcanoes, and desolate beaches far beyond the safety-net of Belize. Love and loss during the holidays Amedisys Hospice is offering an opportunity to those who have lost loved ones to learn ways of coping through the holiday season and to share their stories. Chicken or Pork BBQ Fundraiser The American Legion Post 116 in Fuquay-Varina is putting on a “Chicken or Pork BBQ Fund Raiser” Friday, Nov. 13 at the post located at 6400 Johnson Pond Road in Fuquay-Varina from 10:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. or when all plates are gone. All take out plates are $7 and the legion will deliver to businesses (please call your in orders at 557-5990). Please come out to help support your American Legion who help support our veterans and troops.

Southern Regional GAP Kincare Support Group The Southern Regional GAP (Grandparents as Parents) Kincare Support Group meets once a month on the third Friday evening of the month at 6:30 p.m. The mission of the Southern Regional GAP is to provide ongoing support not only to grandparents but all family members caring for other family members. GAP meets at the Fuquay-Varina Presbyterian Church at 310 N. Ennis St. in Fuquay-Varina. The downstairs meeting room can be accessed through the back entrance. Come share resources and community support and listen to informative speakers. Second Annual Angel Gala On Sunday, Nov. 22, 2009, Brittany’s Battle, Inc. will host Second Annual Angel Gala to be held at 1705 Prime in Raleigh. The Garner, N.C. non-profit organization, Brittany’s Battle, Inc. supports families battling cancer. The group also raises dollars for lung cancer research. This year’s event will feature a buffet dinner, dancing, door prizes and an on-line and silent auction. GMHS will collect donations for the UNC Children’s Hospital at their Oct. 30 game against East Wake. East Garner Middle will once again host their annual Penny Wars! Bible Buddies New Life Wesleyan Church is offering Bible Buddies, a special needs class, for ages K-5th. Military Families Connection This is a group of military families that live away from a base, who meet to learn from and lean on each other. It is very important to be with others that are going through the same thing that you are. We can help you through the difficult time when your loved one is in harm’s way, or will be deployed soon. Scouts Needed Troop 397 meets every Monday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at St. Mary Mother of Church in Garner (1008 Vandora Springs Road). Immunization Clinic Wake County Human Services offers an Immunization Clinic on Mondays and Fridays at the Wake County Southern Regional Center. The SRC is located at 130 N. Judd Parkway NE in Fuquay-Varina, directly across from the U.S. Post Office, and is open from 8:30 a.m. until 5:15 p.m. Appointments are recommended and can be made by calling 212-7000 and requesting an appointment at SRC. Fees are based on the type of vaccine used, but all children’s’ vaccines are free for all children 18 and younger.
