PTA Vice President of Ways and Means Vicki Nizen said kids have practiced for the fun run for the last month, getting kids moving each week. It was also a way for students to learn being healthy can be fun and not work.
With nearly 600 students involved, the school had a goal of 3,500 laps. The students surpassed the goal, running 3,862 laps - more than 965 miles.
Students received donations for the school’s PTA for every lap they ran. All of the money will be put back into the school.
Local businesses and organizations, like YMCA, contributed.
“It’s not just a school event,” PTA President Amy Rambeau said. “It’s a community event.”
William Beasley III, vice president of Rockstar Entertainment, LLC, donated his services for the event. Keeping the students motivated with tunes like the SpongeBob theme song, Miley Cyrus’ “Party in the USA” and Taylor Swift’s “Love Story,” Beasley said it was his way of giving back to the community.
Principal Dr. Frank Creech even agreed to run the same amount of laps as the school’s longest runner, if the students met the 3,500-lap goal.
“We’ll see what our final total is and then I will put the running shoes on,” he said.
