The Captain Johnston Blakeley Chapter, United States Daughters of 1812 sponsored a tombstone dedication and wreath laying ceremony for Pvt. Banister White, of the Powhatan county Virginia Militia, who fought in the War of 1812. Private White was the great great grandfather of Lynne White Belvin, of Garner, State and Chapter Historian of the Captain Johnston Blakeley Chapter of the US Daughters of 1812.
Lynne White Belvin dedicated the tombstone and Betsy Sargisson of Worster, Mass. laid the wreath. Both are great great granddaughters and were joined by other great granddaughers Louise Banister Perkins, from Roanoke, Va., Nancy Black Paillio from Virginia Beach, Va. and Catherine Black Powell from Wems, Va. Also attending were Roy Nicholas, a World War II Veteran of Powhatan, Va., Frank and Linda Baldwin of Powhatan, Va. and their daughter Molly and sons Ethan and Jamie Massey from Bon Aire, Va.
The Baldwins served a picnic lunch and French Champagne. Tom Belvin, gave a toast to Banister White and all the men who served in the Virginia Militia. In the War of 1812. Banister White served in two drafts of the War of 1812, one for himself and one for his aged father, John White.
Linda and Frank Baldwin have been restoring the old Banister White home, White Oak, on the old Buckingham Road in Powhatan, Va. for many years. Banister originally built the home in 1830 where he lived with his first wife, Dianah Holloway Cox White and their eight children. After her death he lived there with his second wife, Frances Mosely White and their daughter, until his death in 1868 at the age of 75.
