The Town Council voted Jan. 4 to extend its support of the Garner Revitalization Association’s Music on Main concert series and to allow alcoholic beverages at the Garner Historic Auditorium during special events.

Getting straight to the point, the Council did not deliberate on whether to back the concert series for another season.

The concert series is already in the planning stages and with the Town’s support, the GRA secured the use of a stage, staff setup and removal, trash containers and collection and police presence.

The Music on Main After Work concert series will run from May through September, with one concert each month.

As part of the consent agenda, the Council decided unanimously to approve the option to sell and or serve alcohol at the GHA during special events.

The Alcoholic Beverages Policy and Permit Requirements states that special events include weddings, reunions, receptions, performances and fundraising events only.

Also, the only forms of alcohol that will be allowed at the GHA are beer, wine and champagne.

Any user of the auditorium that plans to sell or serve alcohol must work with the Parks and Recreation Department to obtain the services of an off-duty Garner police officer for at least two hours. There would need to be a police: attendee ratio of 1: 250.

Any alcohol sales will end one hour prior to the end of the special event or rental as well.

BYOB? Nope. The policy prohibits any “brown-bagging,” so auditorium-goers should leave their own alcoholic beverages at home.

The trend of going green

Councilman Buck Kennedy suggested the Town collect data on solid waste and recycling numbers since residents received their new containers. He said it would be interesting to track the numbers and send the information to Wake County because he believes more recycling has been taking place since the new containers were distributed last fall.
