Mayor Ronnie Williams told a room full of local clergy members, political officials and Garner residents Jan. 14 that it is much better to light a candle than to fear the darkness.
Kicking off the New Year with the Mayor’s annual prayer breakfast was Williams’ way of lighting a candle on the uncertainty of what 2010 will bring.
Even in unsure times, Williams said there is much to be thankful for, like the passing of the ConAgra accident last June.
“There are many reasons people are happy that 2009 is in the past,” Williams said.
Pastor Joseph Lewis of Awesome Word Ministries was the guest speaker for the event, talking about the parable of the talents.
The man described in Matthew 25:14-30 gave his three servants talents based on their abilities. Two of the servants invested the moneys and the third buried his master’s talon out of fear, not gaining any additional funds on interest.
“Whenever God gives to you, He already knows your ability,” Lewis said. “You are expected to do what pleases God with what God has given to you.”
Lewis said God places every person where they are and wants them to do their best so that he can call each one his “good and faithful servant”. Fearing the uncertain and not leaning on the Lord for strength, Lewis said, will lead to God’s disappointment.
Lewis’s message is one Williams hopes Garner residents remember and apply in their own lives.
“As you leave here and go about your business, your life will be your testimony,” Williams said.
