Town staff learned last week that auditors are missing nearly $10,000 from the Garner Fire and Rescue Department budget.

The discovery came during the department's annual audit.

Assistant Town Manager Rodney Dickerson said the Town was surprised by the information and is being reactionary at this point.

While Fire and Rescue workers aren't town employees, officials from the Fire Board met with Dickerson met and Town Manager Hardin Watkins to discuss how Garner would handle the issue.

Both Wake County and Garner have offered their auditors and town staff has said it will help the Fire Department create the budget for 2010-2011.

Dickerson said it is too early to say whether the money was embezzled.
