On Apr. 5, the Mayor and Town Council accepted the 2009 All American Award from the National Relay for Life Organization on behalf of the Garner community. Representatives presenting the award were Jill Cottongim, Event Chair-man, Nikki Martin, Co-Chairman and Angela Matthews, Publicity Chair-man of the Garner Relay for Life Committee.

This national award recognizes communities that have shown overall growth in their event, retention, Relay branding, diversity, the connection between Relay For Life and the American Cancer Society and leadership in incorporating the 5D’s in Relay events and throughout the year. The 5D’s include: Fundraising Development, Event Development, Leadership Development, Team Development, and Survivorship Development.

The American Cancer Society Relay for Life is a life-changing event that gives everyone in communities across the globe a chance to celebrate the lives of people who have battled cancer, remember loved ones lost, and fight back against the disease. At Relay, teams of people camp out and take turns walking around a track or path. Each team is asked to have a representative on the track at all times during the event. Because cancer never sleeps, Relays are overnight events up to 24 hours in length.

The Garner Relay for Life event is a community effort that is supported by residents, businesses, churches and various teams that are formed to walk at the event and seek donations in support of the American Cancer Society. The Garner Community has raised over 1 million dollars since the first Relay for Life event was held here in 1998.

The 2010 Garner Relay for Life Event will be held April 23-24 at Garner’s Lake Benson Park. The event begins with an opening ceremony at 5 p.m. on Apr. 23, followed by a luminary ceremony at 9 p.m. A special Kid’s Walk will be held at 9 a.m. on Apr. 24, followed by a closing ceremony at 10 am. If you would like more information on this event, please visit the Garner Relay for Life web site at www.garnerrelay.org, contact the Relay Committee by emailing garnerrelay@ gmail.com or call Sarah Caudle at 919-334-5245.
