Garner Deadlines Thursday by 12 p.m. (the week prior to publication date) is the deadline for submission of typed, faxed and handwritten items to be submitted for the following week's paper. Autism Benefit Former Ms. America Susan Jeske will stop by Simonz restaurant in Angier and show people exactly how dangerous cosmetics can be. There will be a raffle to benefit Autism Research. Men’s Breakfast Christian men in the greater Raleigh area are invited to the Men’s Breakfast Saturday, May 8 at 8:30 a.m. at Potters Hand Bible Church (3468 Apex Peakway in Apex). The guest speaker will be Bill Cobey, a graduate of Emory University and Wharton Business School. He has been a loyal public servant for many years in North Carolina. In 2008 he was the North Carolina director of Mike Huckabee’s presidential campaign and has served as the chairman of the NC Republican Party. He will be joining the Men’s Breakfast to share his testimony and his strong spiritual convictions. Reservations encouraged but the event is free of charge. Third Annual Partnership for Children Beach Ball The Partnership for Children of Johnston County and the Miracle League are kicking off a county-wide fundraising campaign with the Third Annual Partnership for Children Beach Ball on Saturday, May 15 from 7 to 11 p.m. at the Johnston County Agricultural Center. Magical Mystery Dances Infinity Ballet Theatre presents “Magical Mystery Dances” on May 16, 2010 at 3 p.m. at the Garner Historic Auditorium. A diverse dance program in three parts; including “Fairytale Variations,” with excerpts of the classics; “Magical Mystery Dances” inspired by songs of the Beatles and “Strauss in the Park,” a fun loving and uplifting ballet with Guest Artist, Jhe Russell joining the cast of 80 dancers. Raleigh Drum Circle Drum for the Hoop Jam every Wednesday evening from 6:30 p.m. until dark (through October) at Pullen Park above the aquatics center. The event is free. Bring your instruments or borrow ours. Extra hula hoops are available too. Lake Johnson Jam will hold a Community Drum Circle on Monday, May 17 and June 21 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Lake Johnson Park boat house, 4601 Avent Ferry Road, Raleigh. The event is rain or shine. Farmer’s Market The Garner Revitalization Association (GRA) had planned to launch a Farmers Market in Downtown Garner this spring to feature local produce and products. Unfortunately, a lack of farmers, vendors and volunteers has forced GRA to postpone the launch of the market to next spring. “We think the farmers market will be a great way to bring people to Downtown Garner” said GRA Executive Director John Hodges. “We are disappointed that we could not launch this spring, but more time is needed to recruit enough vendors and volunteers to make the market successful.” Planning for the market will continue through the summer and an organizational meeting will be held in the fall. Vendors and volunteers who are interested in participating are encouraged to contact the GRA office at 773-4402 or by email at downtowngarner@nc.rr.com.

WIC Program The WIC Program provides supplemental nutritious foods, nutrition education, breastfeeding support and referrals to health care and community resources. Services are available in Raleigh, Fuquay-Varina, Zebulon, Wake Forest and Brentwood. Those eligible must *be a pregnant or postpartum woman, infant, or child under age 5, live in North Carolina, and have a gross annual income under 185 percent of the Federal poverty guidelines. Calling Service Minded People The Garner Lions Club is expanding! Our club is looking for individuals who are interested in getting involved with their community and helping people in need. The Garner Lions club has helped over 20 individuals in the local area with assistance in getting an eye exam and getting glasses over the last year. We had a BBQ chicken fundraiser in late winter to raise funds to help local citizens in need. Our main goal is to assist those who are visually impaired. We help provide help for Camp Dogwood, a camp specialized for those who are visually impaired. We also help in funding Campaign SightFirst, an international effort to eradicate preventable blindness throughout the world. Sharing Our Stories Grief Support Group Sharing Our Stories, a grief support group sponsored jointly by Resources for Seniors and Amedisys Hospice meets biweekly, first and third Mondays of every month from 10 to 11:30 a.m. at the Garner Senior Center, 205 E. Bible Buddies New Life Wesleyan Church is offering Bible Buddies, a special needs class, for ages K-5th. Military Families Connection This is a group of military families that live away from a base, who meet to learn from and lean on each other. It is very important to be with others that are going through the same thing that you are. We can help you through the difficult time when your loved one is in harm’s way, or will be deployed soon. We have classes, speakers as needed, and discuss problems and resources. Anyone is welcome to come. Scouts Needed Troop 397 meets every Monday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at St. Mary Mother of Church in Garner (1008 Vandora Springs Road). Special Ava Gardner Museum tour packages The Ava Gardner Museum offers several tour packages for groups of all sizes. From civic clubs to church groups, bus tours to family reunions, the Ava Gardner Museum regularly hosts tour groups from all around the country. The group’s visit begins with a tour of the Ava Gardner Museum. Admission tickets include a 15-minute biography shown in the Museum’s theatre and more than 5,000 sq. ft of exhibit space.
