“I certainly am glad it is over with and I am very humbled about winning it,” Matthews said.
His support team traveled around Wake County throughout the race and worked the polls the day of the election. Matthews was in Apex when he learned the race had been called for him.
“I got home as quickly as possible and we had a great celebration,” he said. “It took me the next day to fully realize what our team had accomplished and that I won a big race.”
Matthews has received calls and emails from people across the country congratulating him on the win and telling him they agree with his Tea Party Conservative message.
As much as he appreciates the accolades, Matthews is ready to get to work on his race against incumbent Lindy Brown this November.
“Lindy has been in office four years, but we have been watching the issues and paying close attention to the voters all over the county, so we are ready,” he said. “Our November campaign has already started with volunteers that are ready to help us win. We will continue our grass roots campaign throughout the county.”
There are some pretty tough issues that will face Matthews, Brown and Wake County before the November election. Matthews said the County Commissioners have already prejudged the new Wake County School Board before allowing the members to put their plan of action together for neighborhood schools. He would rather allow the School Board some time to prove itself because the members are elected by the people and are carrying out what the majority of voters said they wanted.
Another hot button issue is making sure ends meet when it comes to the budget.
“County government must have a budget where we live within our means like the citizens of Wake County have to do,” he said.
If Matthews wins the general election, the majority of the Commissioner seats will be taken up by conservatives, he said, which is why he feels the upcoming showdown with Brown is so important.
“I am asking all concerned citizens to go to my web site, matthewsforwakecommissioner.com or our Facebook page and join us so we can make a positive difference this fall,” Matthews said.
A former Garner Alderman for eight years, Matthews is a retired Army officer and Vietnam Veteran. He was a volunteer fireman and first responder.
Matthews has been a business owner and said he understands what small businesses are going through in the tough economic setting.
“To put it simple, I am a strong leader that has served his country and fellow man all my life. It is all about service to others and doing what it takes to get the job done,” he said. “I will never forget that I serve the People and not me.”
