The North Carolina Council of Churches applauds the May 3 launch of the National Physical Activity Plan (NPAP). The plan is the first of its kind for our nation, providing a clear, detailed roadmap for creating an environment in which Americans can be physically active where they live, work and play.
In North Carolina, just over half of kids and less than half of adults are getting the recommended amount of exercise, one out of three children are obese, and physical inactivity and poor nutrition cost our state $57 billion in medical costs, workers’ compensation and lost productivity. The Council stands in support of a plan that will do much to reduce the growing health care burden on our state and nation.
As people of faith, we believe that every person is made in God’s image; that we are fearfully and wonderfully made. We also believe that God calls us to be good stewards of what has been given to us – our physical bodies included. Let us not destroy this sacred gift by eating unhealthy foods, getting insufficient exercise, using tobacco products or engaging in other unhealthy behaviors that could shorten our lives.
The Council is challenging congregations in North Carolina to take steps, no matter how small, toward better health. Be creative – start a church walking group, participate in a local run- or walkathon, form a church sports league, or build a hiking trail. Whatever you decide, just be active!
