My Old True Love by Sheila Kay Adams

“Some people have a longer and harder row to hoe in life than others and that is just how it is,” begins our feisty heroine, Arty. She’s speaking of Larkin Stanton, who came into this word just as his mother was leaving it. He is named by his 5-year-old cousin and while growing up together in the Appalachian, Mountains of N.C., the boys become inseparable friends sharing a love for life and music. As they mature, they find themselves at odds; falling in love with the same beautiful woman and on different sides of the Civil War. The only thing better than this book is the audio book. Enjoy. Portrait in Sepia by Isabel Allende

This is a magnificent historical novel set at the end of the nineteenth century in Chile. Recounted in the voice of a young woman in search of her roots, Portrait in Sepia is a novel about memory and family secrets. This is a richly detailed exploration of family love and personal growth. Twenties Girl by Sophie Kinsella

After attending the dismal funeral of Sadie, her 105 year old aunt, Lara is visited by the old lady’s ghost who challenges her to find a missing necklace. Comedy ensues as Lara begins the search, tries to get her business up and running and deals with an unfaithful boyfriend. Sadie and Lara are a great team, with both learning about life and love. Another fun read by Sophie Kinsella. (Sandy--East Regional)

Chasing Fireflies by Charles Martin

Just before T-boning her Impala into a train, a woman on a suicide run kicks her horrifically abused little boy, known only as Snoot—or to the state, John Doe 117—out of the car. Chase Walker, a reporter for the Brunswick Daily in Glen County, Ga., is assigned to follow up on the boy, whose abandonment mirrors Chase's own haunted past. The little boy, apparently mute, is an artistic prodigy who excels at chess and quickly works his way into Chase's heart. A haunting story about fishing, baseball, home cooking, and other matters of life and death. (Catharine - Southeast Regional)
