Camp Invention The Garner Educational Foundation is pleased once again to bring Camp Invention, a week-long academic day camp to Garner. The camp for rising first graders through rising sixth graders will be June 21-25, 2010, at East Garner Magnet Middle School. Southern Gospel Concert Lighthouse Gospel Music Association will host a southern gospel concert June 25 at 7 p.m. at Lighthouse Convention Center (326 Tryon Road in Raleigh) featuring special guest Naomi and The Segos from Centerville, S.C. and One Accord from Raleigh, N.C. Vacation Bible School Clyde’s Chapel Baptist Church near Archer Lodge will celebrate the theme “Saddle Ridge Ranch” during Vacation Bible School programs Sunday, June 27, through Thursday, July 1. American Legion Post 116 Community July 4 Celebration Please join us for an old fashion 4th of July celebration at our beautiful American Legion Post facilities at 6400 Johnson Pond Road in Fuquay-Varina, on Sunday, July the 4th. There were be plenty of free rides and games for the kids, local bands will be playing all day, food and beverages will be available, and even some fun games for the adults like horseshoes, corn-hole, putting contest and others. The festivities start at 2 p.m. and go through 8 p.m. Our mission at the American Legion is to support our active and retired military personnel and all of the proceeds will go towards that support. Host families needed Youth For Understanding USA (YFU USA) is seeking local host families to host high school exchange students for the next school year. Host families provide a place to live and three meals a day plus the encouragement, advice and love to help their new family member through a semester or year in a new home. The students bring their own spending money and good health insurance plus the willingness to be a good family member, follow family rules and help out with family responsibilities. YFU provides local representatives who support the students and families to ensure a good experience for all involved. Calling Service Minded People The Garner Lions Club is expanding! Our club is looking for individuals who are interested in getting involved with their community and helping people in need. The Garner Lions club has helped over 20 individuals in the local area with assistance in getting an eye exam and getting glasses over the last year. We had a BBQ chicken fundraiser in late winter to raise funds to help local citizens in need. Our main goal is to assist those who are visually impaired. We help provide help for Camp Dogwood, a camp specialized for those who are visually impaired. We also help in funding Campaign SightFirst, an international effort to eradicate preventable blindness throughout the world. Military Families Connection This is a group of military families that live away from a base that meets to learn from and lean on each other. Scouts Needed Troop 397 meets every Monday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at St. Mary Mother of Church in Garner (1008 Vandora Springs Road). The Troop is looking for new members, but those interested must be in at least sixth grade. The Troop does a number of activities including camping, hiking, community service projects and much more.
