Garner Deadlines Thursday by 12 p.m. (the week prior to publication date) is the deadline for submission of typed, faxed and handwritten items to be submitted for the following week's paper. They can be faxed to 552-7564. The deadline for e-mailed submissions is Friday by 5 p.m. Send email to kgriffith@raleighsouthonline.com. Submissions should be no longer than 150 words.

GSHS ’80 Class Reunion Classmates of 1980 are inviting fellow class members and others to join us for a class get-together Oct. 8 for a Home football game and Oct. 9 for a social at the Garner Civitan Club on Poole Lane at 6 p.m. Dinner, music and social time together are planned along with door prizes from local businesses. Faith, Scripture, Anglicanism, traditional worship An inquirer’s class regarding faith, scripture, anglicanism and traditional worship will be held Tuesday evenings beginning Sept. 7 and going through Sept. 28. The class is sponsored by Raleigh Anglican Fellowship and led by Rev. John Lawrence Sharpe, PhD. The class will be held from 7 to 8 p.m. each week. Registration is free. The class will be held at the Comfort Inn at 1411 E. Williams St. in Apex. College-age Ballroom Dancing Class Stressed about classes starting back? This dance class will be an inexpensive, fun, relaxing, but also energizing way to relieve stress and learn to ballroom dance at the same time! This will be held EVERY Thursday from 9 to 10 p.m. Every second and fourth Thursday we will have a dance party from 10 to 11:30 after the class, as well. And to make it even better, it is just for and college-age students and people! Come with a group, come by yourself, or bring a dance partner, no matter what, it will be a lot of fun learning to dance with people your own age! Class costs $7.50. Dance Party costs $7.50. GSHS Class of 1985 The Garner Senior High School Class of 1985 is planning its 25-year reunion to be held Sept. 10-11, 2010. Join your fellow GSHS Class of ‘85 Trojans Sept. 10 for a Friday night football game on Sept. 10, 2010, at the Garner High Stadium. Please arrive by 7 p.m. for the 7:30 p.m. kickoff. A section at the far end of the home side of the stadium will be reserved for the Class of ‘85. Bring the family and a bag lunch and beverage to Lake Benson Park Sept. 11 for an afternoon of fun from Noon - 3 p.m. Please RSVP to Joey Cagle so a picnic shelter can be reserved. Join your fellow graduates at the Rand-Bryan house for a night of reminiscing! Cost is $38/person or $75/couple. 7 p.m. to midnight. Festival of Hope New Hope Church is preparing to open a Garner campus this September! Pre-Grand Opening events include a free family festival called Festival of Hope on Saturday, Sept. 11 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. This festival is free and open to the community and will feature fun for all ages such as bounce houses, food, colossal slide, obstacle course, toddler playground, and climbing wall. The new campus will offer two identical morning worship celebrations each Sunday at 9 a.m. and 10:45 a.m. with exciting worship, relevant Biblical teaching, and great children's and student ministries. The offerings will mirror everything offered at the Durham campus. The church will open in the building formerly used by the small congregation of New Life Church located at 2967 Benson Road in Garner - members of New Life are joining with a group from the Durham campus to open New Hope Garner!

Girl Scout Recruitment Event Girl Scouts Area 22 of Garner is holding a Recruitment Event for girls wanting to join scouting and adults who would like to be a leader. Come to the Event and sign up for a year of fun and adventure. It will be held Monday, Sept. 13, 5:30-7:30 p.m. at Garner Church of God, 2208 Benson Rd. (Hwy 50), Garner.

International Food Festival Come to the International Food Festival Saturday, Sept. 25 at St. Ann Church in Clayton featuring foods of 14 countries, including Greece, India, Italy, Mexico, El Salvador, Hungary, Guatemala, Poland, Honduras, Colombia, Ireland, Philippines, USA and the ever popular International Desserts. International live entertainment will include the Mariachi band Amanecer Tapatio, Barrowburn Celtic band, the Wake and District Pipe Band, the bluegrass band Black River Express, a Filipino dance troupe and more. Superball Charity Golf Tournament The Garner and Knightdale Lions clubs are having the Second Annual Superball Charity Golf Tournament at River Ridge Golf Club on Monday, Sept. 27. Sign in starts at noon and tee times at 1 p.m. Proceeds from this tournament go to help support many statewide projects for visually impaired individuals as well as to sponsor scholarships for local high school students. HHC 30th Special Troops Battalion The fifth annual Craft Fair hosted by the Family Readiness Group (FRG) for the HHC 30th Special Troops Battalion will be held Saturday, Oct. 16, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the N.C. National Guard Armory (801 Stadium Drive in Durham). This event will feature the works of more than 60 North Carolina artists and crafters. Jewelry, pottery, glass works, paintings, wood crafts, candles, birdhouses and much more will be among the many items available to start the holiday shopping season. There will be activities for kids to enjoy including face painting and bounce houses. Concessions will also be on sale to benefit FRG sponsored 30th BSTB unit family activities. Admission and parking are free. There will be ample parking across the street from the armory at Durham County Stadium. The FRG team provides family support by giving comfort and information to guard members, their families and friends during periods of normal military life, but especially during times of separation due to schools, annual training, training exercises and mobilizations. As part of this organization, the FRG team is also responsible for fundraising that will go towards two annual events for soldiers and their families. WIC Program The WIC Program provides supplemental nutritious foods, nutrition education, breastfeeding support and referrals to health care and community resources. Services are available in Raleigh, Fuquay-Varina, Zebulon, Wake Forest and Brentwood. Those eligible must be a pregnant or postpartum woman, infant, or child under age 5, live in North Carolina, and have a gross annual income under 185 percent of the Federal poverty guidelines. Calling Service Minded People The Garner Lions Club is expanding! Our club is looking for individuals who are interested in getting involved with their community and helping people in need. The Garner Lions club has helped over 20 individuals in the local area with assistance in getting an eye exam and getting glasses over the last year. We had a BBQ chicken fundraiser in late winter to raise funds to help local citizens in need. Our main goal is to assist those who are visually impaired. We help provide help for Camp Dogwood, a camp specialized for those who are visually impaired. We also help in funding Campaign SightFirst, an international effort to eradicate preventable blindness throughout the world. Sharing Our Stories Grief Support Group Sharing Our Stories, a grief support group sponsored jointly by Resources for Seniors and Amedisys Hospice meets biweekly, first and third Mondays of every month from 10 to 11:30 a.m. at the Garner Senior Center, 205 E. Volunteers Needed Can you spare one hour per month? If so, would you donate it to us? Meals on Wheels is looking for volunteers who are willing to spare one hour of their time to deliver lunch to home bound citizens in the Garner area on weekdays only. Bible Buddies New Life Wesleyan Church is offering Bible Buddies, a special needs class, for ages K-5th. Held every Sunday from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. The class focuses on music, sensory activities, art, snacks and one on one Bible teaching. Each child is prayed for every Sunday.
