The General Federation of Women’s Clubs of North Carolina (GFWC-NC) will host the “LINKS 4 LITERACY” golf tournament on Thursday, Sept. 30, at Riverwood Golf Club located just outside Clayton. The public is invited and encouraged to participate. This golf event is for both men and women.

Riverwood Golf Club, a major sponsor of this event, features three beautiful nine-hole championship golf courses. Tournament play will be “Captain’s Choice”. Check-in begins at 8 a.m. with shotgun start is at 9 a.m. Registration fees for each golfer ($65 for individuals, $250 for teams) include 18 holes of golf, as well as a complimentary t-shirt, goodie-bag, breakfast from Biscuitville, lunch (hotdogs and chips on the go!), and awards banquet afterward. A wide range of prizes will be awarded. In addition to team prizes for first, second, and third places, the event will also include exciting individual golf contests — putting, longest drive, and closest to the pin. Deacon Jones automobile dealership has donated three cars as prizes for Hole-in-One winners. Dinner and awards will follow golf. Door prizes and a silent auction will also be featured. Auction items include golf packages at Eagle Ridge, Hedingham, and Riverwood. Golfers should contact GFWC-NC Headquarters at 919-790-8684 or 800-448-8684 for registration forms or more information. The registration deadline is Sept. 26.

Proceeds from the tournament will help to fund a new GFWC-NC Teaching Scholarship to be awarded to an outstanding college Junior (male or female) who plans to become a K-12 teacher. Sharon Greeson, GFWC-NC President, and Andie Johnson, GFWC-NC Director of Juniors, have designated “LITERACY – THE ADVENTURE OF A LIFETIME” as their Special Project for 2010-2012. Statewide goals for this two-year project include volunteering 75,000 hours on projects in North Carolina communities to support literacy, as well as raising funds for the new teaching scholarship.
